What Is a Percentage?

In mathematics, a percentage is a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. Percentages are commonly used to compare values, describe proportions, and show relative change.

The symbol % means “per hundred.” For example, 35% is the same as 35 out of 100.

Understanding Percentages

Percentages are dimensionless, meaning they do not have units. They simply describe the relationship between two quantities.

Percentages vs Fractions and Decimals

Percentages can be converted into fractions or decimals. For example, 35% equals 0.35 as a decimal and 35/100 as a fraction.

How Percentages Are Calculated

A percentage is calculated by dividing one value by another and multiplying the result by 100.

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

Example: 25 ÷ 50 = 0.5 × 100 = 50%

This means 25 out of 50 represents 50% of the total.

Percentage Formula

The basic percentage formula involves three values: the percentage, the base value, and the result.

P × V1 = V2

Example: P × 30 = 1.5
P = 1.5 ÷ 30 = 0.05 = 5%

When solving manually, percentages must be converted into decimals, then converted back into percent form if needed.

Percentage Difference

Percentage difference compares two values by measuring their absolute difference relative to their average. It is commonly used when there is no clear starting value.

Percentage Difference = |V1 − V2| ÷ ((V1 + V2) / 2) × 100

Example: |10 − 6| ÷ 8 = 0.5 = 50%

Percentage Increase and Decrease

Percentage change measures how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value.

Percentage Change = (Difference ÷ Original Value) × 100

To apply a percentage change directly, convert the percentage to decimal form and add or subtract it from 1.

Example: 500 increased by 10%
500 × (1 + 0.10) = 550

Example: 500 decreased by 10%
500 × (1 − 0.10) = 450

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a percentage always out of 100?

Yes. By definition, percentages represent parts per hundred.

Can percentages be greater than 100?

Yes. Values above 100% indicate an amount greater than the original whole.

What is the difference between percent change and percent difference?

Percent change compares against an original value, while percent difference compares two values equally.
